Hey Reader,
I almost missed the biggest opportunity of my career.
A trusted leader of mine had just told me she was transferring to another department—to take on the top job and completely reinvent how things were run.
I congratulated her, and then she hit me with something unexpected:
"Do you want to join me as the assistant manager?"
And like a complete idiot, I said.....
"Nah. I'm good."
I couldn’t see the opportunity staring me in the face.
I was comfortable. Had a plan. Was working towards it.
And I didn’t know what she had in mind for her new department, so I defaulted to staying put.
It's much easier to make no change than it is to change everything. Right? Right.
Luckily, she didn’t take my no for an answer.
"Well, that’s too bad. I was just asking out of courtesy. We’ve already decided you’re joining me. Congratulations!"
At first, I was offended. How could someone decide my career path without my input? I felt like a pawn.
But in reality, that moment changed everything for me.
I was thrown into an environment that demanded constant learning, high-pressure decision-making, and the chance to build a team that ended up shattering expectations.
It changed everything for me.
And none of it would have happened if I had stayed where I was.
Adaptability is a Career Superpower
The future doesn’t belong to those who wait for the perfect opportunity.
It belongs to those who adapt, who step into the unknown, and who say yes even when the path isn’t clear.
So how can you become more adaptable starting today? Try this:
- Say Yes Before You’re Ready – If an opportunity comes your way, instead of listing reasons you’re not qualified, assume you can figure it out. Say yes, then get to work.
- Expose Yourself to New Ideas – Read outside your industry, listen to a podcast on a topic you know nothing about, or grab coffee with someone in a totally different career. The more perspectives you have, the easier it is to adapt.
- Make Small, Fast Decisions – Instead of over-analyzing, commit to making quicker, lower-stakes decisions every day. Adaptability is built in the small moments, not just the big ones.
- Ask, “What’s the Best That Could Happen?” – We often hesitate because we fear the worst. Flip it. Train yourself to ask what’s possible instead of what’s risky.
- Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable – Every time you do something unfamiliar, you train yourself to handle uncertainty better. Sign up for something that pushes you—a class, a new responsibility, or even a cold email to someone you admire.
Where in your career are you hesitating because you don’t know exactly how things will play out?
Maybe the next big move is already knocking.
Stay vigilant,
